MidEuropa, the leading European private equity investor with deep roots in Central Europe, announces today that its portfolio company Optegra, a leading pan-European ophthalmology platform, has completed its 4th acquisition in Slovakia, becoming the undisputed market leader in less than 18 months.

As one of Europe’s fastest growing ophthalmology providers, Optegra’s development over the past year is a strong example of how the firm utilises strategic add-ons as a key growth lever, helping to expand businesses’ regional footprints and improve levels of operational excellence.

Since MidEuropa’s majority investment in February 2023, the firm has worked alongside Optegra’s ambitious management team, and helped accelerate their plan to develop into a market leader across four attractive European markets: Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and the UK. This development has included three further acquisitions in Slovakia over the past year, which helped to secure its #1 position in Slovakia, and included a total of 7 clinics, 23 consultation offices (“COs”) and 5 optical stores. Optegra’s presence has also been expanded in the Czech Republic via three acquisitions, which included 3 clinics, 9 consultation offices and 5 optical stores.

Through these add-ons, Optegra will be better placed to expand its operational excellence, operating 43 state-of-the-art clinics, performing over 170,000 surgical procedures per year, leveraging its integrated platform with standardised pathways that ensure efficiency, scalability, and best-in-class clinical outcomes. The acquisitions include vertically integrated clinics with COs and optic stores for the full spectrum of reimbursed cataract, vitreoretinal, AMD, transplant, strabology, and self-payers refractive eye care.

MidEuropa’s commitment to driving value creation by undertaking ambitious buy-and-build initiatives remains strong. In addition to the acquisitions mentioned above, Optegra is also looking for value accretive M&A opportunities in Poland, across both the public and private pay spectrum. This comes as part of its strategy to expand both organically and inorganically its existing footprint while also seeking attractive markets in Western Europe where it can export its highly integrated business model.

MidEuropa looks forward to continuing its mission in identifying promising businesses across Central Europe and helping them grow and expand regionally and internationally.
